Workshop on Migraine and Headache in Children, Adolescents, and Women: Clinical, Societal, and Strategic Approaches

The “Workshop on Headaches among Women and Children in Türkiye,” coordinated by the Türkiye Maternity, Child and Adolescent Health Institute, was held with the participation of academics, clinicians, and public-sector representatives who are experts in their fields. The workshop examined the individual, societal, and economic effects of headaches and migraine, which are common among children, adolescents, and women, and assessed current diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, preventive health services, and awareness-raising initiatives.

During sessions conducted in light of scientific evidence, the effects of headaches on quality of life, education, loss of workforce productivity, and psychosocial well-being were discussed. It was emphasized in particular that migraine is not merely a headache, but a neurological disorder that significantly affects an individual’s daily life and productivity.

The workshop emphasized the early recognition of headaches in children and adolescents, the management of transition into adulthood, the role of primary healthcare services, and the importance of a multidisciplinary approach.

The workshop also evaluated proposed solutions for increasing awareness among the public and healthcare professionals, improving access to current treatment options, supporting the production of epidemiological data at the national level, and reducing the burden of headaches on the healthcare system.

Participants agreed that the assessments and recommendations arising from the workshop should contribute to policymaking processes, preventive health practices, and future scientific research concerning the management of headaches among women and children.
