World Breastfeeding Week: A Healthy Start to Life

Held annually from 1 to 7 August under the leadership of the World Health Organization and UNICEF, World Breastfeeding Week is the occasion for awareness activities conducted worldwide to protect, promote and support breastfeeding. In this context, the Türkiye Maternity, Child and Adolescent Health Institute (TAÇESE) carries out information activities concerning the decisive importance of breast milk during the earliest years of life.

In line with the recommendations of the World Health Organization, infants should be fed exclusively with breast milk for the first six months following birth, and from the sixth month onwards breastfeeding should be continued together with appropriate complementary foods until at least 24 months of age. Initiating breastfeeding within the first hour after birth is recognized as a critical threshold, both for the healthy development of the infant and for the successful continuation of the breastfeeding process.

In addition to containing the nutrients an infant requires in ideal proportions, breast milk strengthens the immune system and provides protection against infections. Scientific studies demonstrate that feeding with breast milk supports brain and cognitive development and strengthens the emotional bond between mother and infant. The benefits of breastfeeding are not limited to the infant; mothers who breastfeed are known to face a reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancer, and their postpartum recovery is supported.

Increasing the prevalence of breastfeeding is not merely an individual preference but a public health priority directed at safeguarding the health of society. Accordingly, it is of considerable importance that mothers have access to accurate information, that they are supported within family and working life, and that they are able to benefit from qualified counseling services.

Mothers wishing to receive counseling and support regarding the breastfeeding process may apply to their nearest Family Health Center or Healthy Life Center.
